WHAT YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT
Recently a Wall Street executive pulled a gun out and shot himself dead. He concluded that he could not live without his stocks. Another man in Los Angeles lost his job so he pulled a gun out and shot his family and himself all dead. He concluded that he, nor his family could not live without a job. I think in challenging times people are discovering what is important and what is not.
People are discovering what they can live without and what they can’t. When I grew up in a family of ten I did 4 paper routes, set up bingo for the Catholic school and picked trash up for the local Dairy Queen if I wanted an ice cream. I never thought I was needy, poor, or without. My dad was a copy editor for the Detroit News yet his salary today would qualify him for the poor farm. The standard of living has grown so high people have forgotten what is essential.
From God’s perspective there are 3 things you cannot live without.
The First thing you cannot live without is a BLOOD SACRIFICE
Hebrews 9:22
And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
Blood sacrifice is an ancient way of living. You can find it in every culture through the ages. Why do people feel they must take blood to satisfy God?
It has to do with the life being in the blood. It has to do with the seriousness of the Sin that separated mankind from God. God was the first to shed blood when he clothed Adam and Eve in animal skin. We see the sacrifice of blood throughout the old testament.
When we minister in Asia the Buddhist say we have a bloody religion. Why? It Cost God the blood of the third person of the trinity, Jesus, to redeem us. He bought us back to God with the price of his own blood so no devil, person, or feeling, could ever say we are not righteous. Our penalty is not ignored or winked at. It it paid for and removed.
The 2nd thing you cannot live without is FAITH
Hebrews 11:6
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarded of them that diligently seek him.
What is thing we call faith that connects us in a personal way to God?
It is a complete resting of your entire weight upon Him for your salvation. Not by our works, church participation, giving, speaking, or good deeds can we receive the free gift of a new life. That new life filled our souls the moment we believe in Him who took our place and paid a price we could not pay. We rely totally on His effort which frees us from worry, fear, guilt and shame. Our good works spring out of His inspiration within us but not to try and earn anything.
The 3rd thing we cannot live without is WORKS
James 2:19
Thou believes that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
In the dynamics of life there should be evidence of a person’s inner being. Who we are will pop out and it is usually in moments that we do not plan for. Tea gives its flavor when put in hot water. It is usually in pressing moments that our inner self reveals outer fruit. In times of fear, faith will paint a picture for the future in the believer. In times of sickness, confidence in the Healer will emerge. In times of anger, peace will calm the storm within. In times of wrongdoing forgiveness will cover the multitude of sin.
This fruit will show up on a believer’s tree. It is not the fruit of a charismatic, Pentecostal, Baptist, Evangelical or Catholic. It is the fruit of a Christian with Jesus Christ living within.
Blessings,
Dr. Kevin
